End of Year Heresy Hobby Recap

With 2025 over and my Winter Break coming to an end I thought it would be worth recapping some of my hobby progress on my new Shattered Legions force for the Horus Heresy. I came down with a terrible cold after Thanksgiving which is why I haven’t had a chance to update this blog, but that’s changing soon! I have a few interesting historical games scheduled as well as a new campaign for Heresy starting soon at Dice Dojo. Last but not least, Adepticon is now looming menacingly on the horizon and I have a decent amount of hobby stuff to do between now and the end of March. I’m planning on updating the blog regularly with my progress.

Shattered Legions

The new rules for running a force of Shattered Legions force in this edition of The Horus Heresy are really neat, and very playable. I have always been interested in building an Isstvan III-themed army of Loyalists from the 4 openly traitor Legions and with this new ruleset this is both possible and pretty easy to do. I have decided to play in the upcoming Heresy campaign, themed around the Martian Civil War, with a Shattered Legion force composed of the Emperor’s Children and the Death Guard. I am also planning to use this force at Adepticon in the Grand Team Event on Saturday. It’s a great excuse to branch out to paint a different Legion, in this case Death Guard, while still working on my Emperor’s Children. I already have some tentative plans on painting up a few squads of World Eater’s using the new MkII Assault Squad Box.

Saul Tarvitz – Emperor’s Children 10th Company Captain

Saul is who my entire EC, and by extension Shattered Legions force, is built around. The leader of the heroic Martyrs of Isstvan III. I have very slowly been working on him for almost a year, but the decision to go all in on Shattered Legions pushed my to finish him. I followed the basics of my normal Emperor’s Children paint scheme, but obviously needed to pick out as many details and flourishes on him armor as possible. I am very pleased with the results!

Emperor’s Children Legion Herald

This is another mini I’ve had built and primed ages ago that I wanted to tackle. He’s in the MkIII command squad set. Will he end up on the tabletop anytime soon? Idk maybe? Does he look cool? Hell yea. The banner decal was awful to cut and fit onto the mini. Big, big shout out to MicroSol and MicroSet for getting that thing into place and adhering nicely to the plastic. He will look great next to the rest of the command squad (up soon on my paint list) or alongside the Palatine Blades.

Death Guard Tactical Squad

My first foray into the Death Guard was a simple Tactical Squad in MkIII plate. Just like the MkVI models, these guys were great to put together and look menacing in their heavy armor. I started by painting a test model using a very simple paint scheme from the one and only Sonic Sledgehammer. The other nine models in the squad painted up super quick and I am really satisfied with how they turned out. I especially love the marine with the Nuncio-Vox, who I used the slung Bolter and the hand signal bits from the Melee Upgrade set for to give him a unique look. I also love how the Sergeant turned out with his Power Fist and Alchem Caster Pistol. I went hard on the chipping and just overall beat up and grimy look for these boys.

Death Guard Techmarine in MkIV PLate

Last up for the year is this Techmarine I painted up in Death Guard livery to serve as my Forge Lord in my Adepticon Shattered Legions force. He will eventually be joined by a Cohort of Thallax Automata as a nod to Alec’s Mechanicum forces in our Grand Team. This was another quick paint job as the Death Guard scheme is pretty simple and looks great with a lot of weathering. I even used Dirty Down’s Rust effect for some of the metallics.
