With Adepticon fast approaching ,and the weather here in Chicago being pretty awful, I managed to make good progress towards my Shattered Legions force for Saturday’s Grand Team event. In the meantime, the Martian Civil War campaign at Dice Dojo kicked off, and there’s been a great amount of players showing up on Sundays to play games of Horus Heresy. The games have been fun and the overall vibes and excitement for Adepticon and more Heresy events has kept me painting my Emperor’s Children and Death Guard. Bolt Action will have to wait!
Deimos Pattern Predator Battle Tank
This tank was part of a giant lot of tanks I picked up a year or so from a buddy at Dice Dojo. After some time spent staring at the turret and where the different weapons fitted in, and looking around the web for ways people have magnetized this thing, I said fuck it and glued the Lascannons on. Now my intention is to use this little tank to hunt dreadnoughts, rhinos, and other random Mechanicum stuff. With the sponson Lascannons it puts out a decent amount of Strength 9 fire, and if you can park it in the right spot for a couple turns it puts out decent damage with the Heavy (D) rule.

As for painting it, I largely followed my typical Emperor’s Children scheme that I took from Midwinter Minis and adapted it for vehicles. For the off-white color on the turret I used my favorite Heavy Warm White from Pro-Acryl. This is my signature color for my Loyalist-flavored, Terran-born Emperor’s Children. It takes more than a few coats to cover up the purple base coat, but I keep them thin, and then give it a watered down Agrax Earthshade or Army Painter Strong Tone wash which really smooths and ties the white color together.
I decided to do plenty of chipping with Vallejo Dark Rust, Citadel Leadbelcher, and even used AK Streaking Grime on the metallics to give this tank a battle-worn look. Last but not least, Vallejo Pigments Desert Dust worked into the treads and bottom of the tank, along with a couple decals and I called this one done.

Death Guard Mortis Poisoner Squad
My second unit of Death Guard, and my choice to use for my Shattered Legion’s “Exemplar of the Legion” allotment, was the Mortis Poisoner Squad. These guys were upgraded to all have Alchem Flamers. This means they auto-hit from the flame template and wound on a 2+. A nasty unit to send at normal 3+ save Marines. These boys will be traveling in a Rhino at Adepticon, but lately they’ve been arriving in style via Drop Pod for my league games. Love a Drop Pod lol.
I built these boys using a combination of MkIII and the new MkII armor. I think both of these Marks suit the Death Guard really well. I gave the Poison Master a Power Axe too to give this squad a fierce look and something helpful should they find themselves in close combat.

As for painting these guys I followed the super-simple scheme from Sonic Sledgehammer. They painted up really quick. To make them stand out a little I used Pro-Acryl Burnt Red on the armor gauntlets on their right arms. This is a call back to the days when the Death Guard were known as the Dusk Raiders, early in the Great Crusade and before Mortarion was discovered. It was easy to paint up a squad as Loyalists, as many Dusk Raiders turned Death Guard had an unfavorable view of their Primarch and fought to death against their Traitor brothers on Isstvan III. This squad believes themselves to Terran-born old guard members of their Legion, loyal to the Emperor, and who have taken up these chemical weapons as a last ditch, dead end fight against the Warmaster’s traitors.

Up Next…
Currently working on my Thallax Cohort, then onto my 3rd (!) Rhino, and a Sicaran Venator. Also ordered these stickers to give out at Adepticon. Big shout out to Sticker Ninja for these, they turned out fantastic.
Almost forgot, I built a Recon Squad and a Vigilator to hunt HQ models during campaign matches.
